Leatherman MUT

The Shooter's Sidekick The Leatherman MUT, developed in conjunction with the US Army, is the first tool of its kind designed to provide tactical support to military operatives.

Launched in October 2010, the MUT eliminates the number of tools soldiers need to carry out in the field. It is particularly useful in disassembling guns for cleaning and repairs. At the same time the MUT aims to serve the needs of the consumer market, particularly outdoorsmen, hunters and shooters.

At first glance the MUT shares a similar appearance and functionality as the other Leatherman multi tools. When you pull it out of its sheathe you’ll see some very familiar features. There is the external knife that you can slide open using one hand, although this one does look thicker and stronger than the ones on other models. It’s also a combination straightedge and serrated knife, and it locks into place and locks away using the same mechanism as other Leatherman multi tools.

A saw completes the MUT's array of external appendages. And because the MUT is a Leatherman you’ll find a replaceable screwdriver tucked in the handle. There’s a replaceable cutter that can be used to cut through 550 chord, strapping, tie-wraps, flexicuffs and a wide range of other strapping materials. A carabiner clip and a bottle opener are also tucked neatly inside the handle, and there is a small solid knob on one end that serves as a hammer.

The Leatherman MUT was intended to be a shooter’s multi tool, the reliable and versatile sidekick to your firearm, and it contains some extra bits that reflect this philosophy. These bits can be used to adjust parts of your gun, such as optics. The pin-punch helps break down M-16, M-1, and AR-15 platforms. The accompanying hammer used in conjunction with the pin-punch to help you drive the pins out. You can fit in your cleaning tools into the socket where the pin-punch fits; it’s a standard 832 thread. A bronze scraper lets you scrape out carbon deposits and the bolt override tool lets you pull out the bolt when your firearm jams.

The MUT also comes with a 3/8 and a half inch wrench that helps you attach optics to a rail. The sheathe that holds this amazing multi tool is designed to carry small Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment (MOLLE), and is itself full of delightful surprises. It offers added functionality such as extra pockets for a flashlight and other accessories. The sheathe itself also serves as a 9 millimeter pistol magazine.

There are three models in the Leatherman MUT line. The original MUT features 18 tools and 3 bits. The MUT EOD only carries 17 tools and 3 bits but it is even more highly specialized than the MUT; it's a true specialist's tool. Often referred to as the original workhorse of the Leatherman family, the Super Tool 300 EOD packs 19 tools that include EOD-specific features. And because they're from Leatherman, these amazing multi tools all come with a 25 year warranty.

Here is what others say about the Leatherman MUT:

I purchased the Leatherman MUT to carry with me while riding off road vehicles in the desert. The MUT has also become my best friend while working on my AR-15. I also use it to assist in cleaning my M4. If you shoot for a living or hobby this is a fantastic tool.

I am a soldier and this great multi-tool has proven to be a EDC, (every day carry). The blades are sharp, the bit driver is a bonus and this thing is useful in nearly any application. I can use it to fix anything from my kids toys to a military tank. If this MUT can survive a tour of duty then it will certainly fix your Honda Civic.
Pros:
It looks great and will hold its own weight in battle.
Cons: It costs a lot and I think it should come with an extra set of bits.

I love my MUT. If you are in the Military, Law Enforcement, EMT or a firearms enthusiast, I think it is a must have tool. If you want my opinion of a great multi-tool, the Leatherman MUT is it. Not only is this well built and synonymous with the quality Leatherman has become known for, but it also has the advantage of being able to carry it by pocket clip, a hook, or in the Molle Sheath. It has a well designed knife that is extremely sharp and holds an edge, even after being used and abused. Although the MUT is a little hefty it is not so heavy that you couldn't comfortably carry it all day.
